In November and December, the animals move from the northern region, dominated by woodlands and hills, to the grassy plains of the south. During the longer rainy season from April to June, they return to the north. It is 610m deep and covers roughly 260 sq km. Due to its dense animal population of approximately 25 000, the crater offers the best game viewing of all the parks in Tanzania. In a matter of minutes, you will be able to see wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elephants and some of the more than 500 bird species in the area. In the morning pick up from your hotel in Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park for game drives. The park runs along the line of the Tarangire River and is mainly made up of low-lying hills on the Great Rift Valley floor. Its natural vegetation mainly consists of Acacia woodland and giant African Baobab trees, with huge swamp areas in the south. Both the river and the swamps act like a magnet for wild animals during Tanzania’s dry season. The Tarangire is reputed to contain some of the largest elephant herds in Africa from June to October. The fierce sun sucks the moisture from the landscape, baking the earth a dusty red and the withered grass as brittle as straw. This African National Park is also home to three rare species of animals – the Greater Kudu and the Fringed-eared Oryx. After a picnic lunch we do an afternoon game drive for more animal-spotting and wildlife experiences, after which you will be driven to Kudu Campsite in Karatu for overnight and dinner.

With a bit of luck you might see elephants and with even more fortune the tree-climbing lions. It was thought for a long time that the Lake Manyara is the only place where lions can be found with this behavior of climbing trees. Baboons and velvet monkeys are found in the forested areas and giraffes nibble at the fresh leaves while the various types of antelopes searching for tasty shoots. After a picnic lunch, there will be more time for further game-drives before it is time to continue towards the Ngorongoro Crater, where you will dinner and overnight close to the rim of the crater at Simba Campsite.
